How to Squat in SL

The purpose of this guide is to reuse old land on SL. Below you will find various ways to build on someone else's land and have it remain there for an unknown amount of time. LL doesn't care until the owner cares. Basically- until the owner(Or someone similar) notices, nothing will happen. If they do notice, then your objects will be returned and you have to find another place to squat. 

Finding another place to squat if you get kicked out is real easy, there is land everywhere all over the mainland. When they return your objects it goes back in your inventory, just put it down again.

  1-HOW TO FIND SQUAT LAND-
  
 1: Right click land or area around you and click edit.
 
 2: Click the create/wand button
 
 3: Check Keep Tool Selected. This allows you to place a prim down on land and to find land where you can build.
 
 4: Start flying around clicking on different parcels until you find one where you can build, which you will be able to know if you are able to place down a prim with the create tool. Once you find one that you can build on, continue to next step
.
5.  Check if the land has auto return set to 0, (About Land > Objects > Land Capacity, Auto Return) and the amount of space it has left to build. The more space the better. 

6. If the land meets your needs (Auto Return set to 0 or off, lots of land impact left, then proceed to setting up your land. 

    Tips:
To see land borders, press CNTRL + SHIFT + ALT + P
To fly in no-fly zones: Ctrl-Alt-V  /  Advanced → Fly Override


  
  2-HOW TO SET UP SQUAT LAND-
                                
1: Find land with no auto return (Check Objects under About Land) 

2. Put platform taking up shape of land and put it very high up in the air 

3. To make sure nobody else can build you just fill up the sim with prims in a pile until it's full


This method works best on grandfathered land, or by people who don't play anymore yet still pay their monthly fee for some reason. 



    3-HOW TO SET UP MEDIA-

Since you do not own the land, you can not edit the music that plays.  You can however still play music with a media player.

1. Put prim on ground

2. Select Face you want screen on

3. Change Material to Media.

4. Put in URL

5. Customize settings and security (Recommend only letting owner or group control the media player)

6. You should now see a media player on the side you picked. If you do not try mousing over it.

Tips:
Make the Screen Side of the Prim full bright. This will make the screen look more like a screen. 


    4-GROUPS-
    
If you are able to get a group, or find one you can use etc, you can pass on full edit permissions to the group, which would allow them to remove a prim/build on the land you are squatting on.

BEWARE: This gives full permissions to everyone in the group and is not specific to rank or changeable.

Essentially, if you want a friend to be able to build on your squat, you would invite him to the group. 


1. Select all objects you've built on squat land.

2. Click Edit, and go to the general tab

3. Click the wrench icon to the right of the group label and select the group you want

4. Click Share, so you share the entire edit permissions with the group

Now you have shared the objects you have selected with the group, giving the other people in the group full access to them.

Tips: 
It is recommended you only invite people to the group you trust, since this is full permissions entirely, for all ranks.
